Top 5 Topics the Best Man should Avoid Mentioning During His Toast

The Best Man’s toast is one of the most anticipated parts of the reception. Other than the wedding band, the best man is supposed to give a little entertainment. He is expected to do a good ribbing of the groom by saying a few funny anecdotes and some embarrassing stories.  There is however a line that should never be crossed. Here are Five things that should never be said, talked about, done or insinuated to by the best man during his toast.

1)    Mentioning an Ex-girlfriend’s name- Never. Ever. Mention the name of an ex-girlfriend during your speech. It makes everybody uncomfortable especially the bride. Even if you disparage the ex-girlfriend, the same still would not work as you will only sound mean and that the only reason the groom is marrying the bride is because she’s slightly better than the ex.
2)    Past sexual escapades- There is an unwritten yet very well known facade during the wedding that the bride and the groom are both pure and chaste. Mentioning your adventures in Puerto Rico or your drunken midnight run to a strip club has no place in a wedding no matter how enlightened the groom was because of the experience.
3)    Doubts that the Groom had- If the groom had doubts, he usually tells his best friend who most probably is the best man. Again, the facade is that the bride and the groom are 100 percent excited to marry one another and anything less is a problem. Mentioning this during the toast sets up a fight between the bride and the groom after the party.
4)    Yourself- There is a tendency sometimes that the Best man would be talking more about himself than about the couple. It would begin as an anecdote with the groom in it but later on devolve into something that is more about the best man than the groom. Nobody wants to listen to this especially if it’s a sob story about your own personal love life. Focus on the bride and groom.
5)    Finances of the Wedding- For sure, the couple especially the bride, put in a lot of time, effort and money to make the event wonderful for their special day. Stick to saying that the wedding is beautiful and so is the reception. Off handed remarks that insinuate that the groom is spending a fortune for the wedding or that there are a lot of problems that happened in the wedding has no place in this speech. Remember that they want things perfect and even if it isn’t, it should not be mentioned.

  1. Their latest shtick. Nothing is more tacky than the best man taking 15 minutes to give his latest comedy routine. It’s unfunny. Speak from the heart.
