Ideas on sharing of bank accounts

As couples tie the knot, they become one. Meaning, they share everything. One’s possession is also owned by the other half.

Traditionally, couples have joint checking accounts. But it is no longer a common practice. Before the marriage, each individual may already have their own financial obligations, like paying for insurance, a debt, or supporting other children. That is why, couples may prefer having separate accounts.

{mosimage} Some say still, there must be some problem with couples not sharing checking accounts. This may be indirectly stating that your partner cannot meddle with your finances. He cannot sign or use your checkbooks, or even consider it as his own.

It is observed though, that some of the happy relationships is caused by commingling of assets upon marriage. There were couples who really don’t mid sharing their rights to their assets with their spouses. To them, communication is more open that way and it makes them both responsible for everything, from budgeting to paying the bills to putting savings on the bank.

There were also couples who, even if not sharing accounts, have come up with an arrangement on who’s in charge with what. For instance, they may have to pay for their individual expenses like their own outfit and is being taken from their own accounts, but when it comes to bill, they share the expenses.

We can never really say which strategy will work for you. The secret is that you always talk, talk, and listen to each other as well. Everything starts from a trial and error process. If sharing does not work for both of you, then try maintaining separate accounts. For as long as you know how to compromise, everything will end out well.
